With rumours circulating that Raf Simons is the new frontrunner for the Dior job, fellow designer Valentino isn't convinced he'd be the right man for to follow in John Galliano's footsteps.

"I'm not sure - it's an amazing job, I don't know if he would be the right person for it," Valentino told us at a private view of Anthony Souza's new photography exhibition this week. "John Galliano is difficult to replace. I think it's important not to jump into things. It needs to be a logical continuation of the brand. But who am I to say anything? I guess we all just have to wait and see."

Karl Lagerfeld has unveiled the first picture from his soon-to-be-launched new and affordable womenswear line - a pair of slim-leg, black trousers paired with a metallic biker jacker and leather vest. A detachable collar bares the words "I only wear the latest thing, it's my job." The collection will be unveiled in its entirety during Couture Fashion Week in Paris on January 25.

Record-Breaking Bag

AN Hermès Birkin handbag has set a world record as the most expensive bag ever to be sold at a public auction, after it reached $203,150 (£129,987). Made using crocodile skin, the rare item features diamond detailing and was sold to an anonymous bidder at a sale in Dallas.

Phones, computers and iPads at the ready: the countdown has really begun now for Online Fashion Week, which kicks off at 9am on Monday. INTERNATIONAL Fashion Weeks have been gaining in pace over the last few seasons - Sao Paolo has celebrated its 15^th year and upped its ante by investing in a new design show and exhibition space, able to house installations and films, and Singapore's Audi Fashion Week brought over Emanuel Ungaro as well as some of London's top names - the established Erdem and the up-and-coming J JS Lee - to help put it on the map. And next up is Tel Aviv, which enlisted the help of Roberto Cavalli to get its proceedings underway for its first Fashion Week in 30 years this last month.
